Will Sub For Culture - Dispatch From The Dancefloor
27 years later, "Love Like This" by Faith Evans is still bringing love to the dancefloor.
First and foremost, this post is dedicated to the legendary Party Mom and someone who has made an indelible mark on my life - Kristen Kaza. I love you and I hope you love this. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Welcome to Dispatch From The Dancefloor - a WSFC off-shoot digging into elements of club culture from your favorite 365 party girl.
As you can imagine, I’ve been outside all month being a Black lesbian curator and one song has unexpectedly followed me to several parties.
It’s not the song you’re thinking it is though. It’s not the song I thought it was either.
Am I the only one who forgets that Fatman Scoop was not on the original version of “Love Like This”?
More often than not, when the infamous Chic sample hits the speakers, the next thing I hear is “You got a hundred dollar bill, get your hands up!”.
So much so, that I was yesterday years old when I realized that is actually a whole ass other song called “Be Faithful” that samples “Love Like This”.
The latter of which is the second single from Faith Evans’ second album Keep the Faith that peaked at number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it one of the biggest hits of her career.
The former was released six months later in March 1999 and is a club classic.
A couple of things come to mind when I think about what this says about culture.
The first is that there will always be a dichotomy between pop culture and club culture. I will always live happily at the intersection of both.
The second is the deceptive nature of memory and how that matches up against a time when you could not just Google the answer to every question you had.
If I’d had Google in 1998, I would probably remember even more about culture (than I already do) but then I wouldn’t have my favorite past time, which is spending my time going down Wikipedia rabbit holes.
Until next time. See you on the dancefloor.
